The New ZL1 Convertible

Camaro’s have been overlooked for quite some time and people tend to pay no attention when a new model comes out. Well, Chevrolet has now released a Camaro ZL1 model as a convertible. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of convertibles and I know that it’s very hit-or-miss for most people. I just heavily prefer the classic hardtop look on cars and that’s where I will always stand.

Chevrolet didn’t consider my personal opinion when making their decision and my letter to them in currently in the mail. Regardless of my stance, this car does tickle the fancy of consumers across the board so let’s get into some specifics. For starters, the convertible comes with a decent price increase. It’s about $6,000 higher than the base model, putting it around the $70k area. Being that it is a convertible, the car is also 200 pounds heavier with the droptop model due to the standard chassis reinforcement that you can find on every other Camaro convertible.

The convertible also used the Camaro SS rear wing for the embedded antenna, since you can’t install one on the soft top. You also lose the electronic limited-slip differential and have to settle for a mechanical unit. To close out the changes, they reworked the suspension a bit to account for the extra weight and removed the Performance Data Recorder, which makes since seeing that the majority of convertible owners probably aren’t taking the car to the track. Other than that, the rest of the package matches the coupe model and the vehicle still isn’t afraid to go from 0-60 in 3.5 seconds.
