Waymo, a self-driving car tech company under Google, has recently opened up a lawsuit against Uber. Waymo is claiming that Uber has stolen information from the company to help aid them in their own personal self-driving technology progress. A key part of this lawsuit is revolving around former Google employee, Anthony Levandowski, who left Google in January of 2016.
Waymo is accusing Levandowski of stealing 14,000 "highly confidential" files and using those files to further his own interest in autonomous driving. After leaving Google, Levandowski opened his own self-driving truck startup, which was purchased by Uber for $680 million in August of 2016. Levandowski was the head of the autonomous driving program at Uber, but has stepped down from his position since the lawsuit formed.
While he does still work for Uber, he will not be aiding in the future of autonomous driving with the company. The trial is currently set for October and both sides will have their opportunities to defend themselves. Waymo thinks the court will side with them and this should be a fairly easy case for them to win. Until then, Uber needs to make sure they have a rock-solid defense ready if they plan on countering this suit.
