Volkswagen is taking things a little bit outside the box and onto the sand with their most recent announcement: a fully electric dune buggy.

We say announced, it's technically a teaser. But like a classy burlesque show, this kind of teasing really showed a lot. New images have been released showing off the automaker's electric dune buggy concept. This means that technical spec and powertrain info remains a mystery. Klaus Bischoff, Volkswagen's head of design, had this to say, at least.

"A buggy is more than a car. It is vibrancy and energy on four wheels. These attributes are embodied by the new e-buggy, which demonstrates how a modern, non-retro interpretation of a classic can look and, more than anything else, the emotional bond that electric mobility can create."

While an electric buggy seems somewhat niche, this is Volkswagen's intention. They want to showcase just how diverse their MEB electric platform can be. Look how easy it was to make this oddly specific model, and what not.

We first had an inkling of an electric buggy back when the new year kicked off. Volkswagen had a corporate Christmas card that showed Santa Claus in a very intentionally designed, but not recognizable vehicle.

I'd love to have one of these. If only I had a reason to.
