"Dieselgate" Then...
Volkswagen is working hard to leave that diesel scandal behind them. Originally VW's top boss, Martin Winterkorn, denied to MPs that his company misled any customers, and claimed that the cars were not set up to cheat emissions regulations. He eventually quit over the scandal, but not before taking copious amounts of money home with him. In 2011, he made 17.5m euros due to large bonus payments.
Note, this whole thing has been going on since 2015, and went on to get messier and messier with Volkswagen drivers suing the company.
And Now
To make major changes and get back in Volkswagen drivers' good graces, VW is getting caps on executive pay: 10m euros with a 5.5m euro cap for board members. This comes after it's been reported that Volkswagen is back to making profits after the scandal.
The carmaker overtook Toyota's title of the world's biggest carmaker. It goes to show, you can equip 11m cars with emissions test-cheating software, and still make it big.
