People rely on Uber a lot these days. It's a quick and easy way to get from one place to another without worrying about calling a cab or trying to get a taxi to notice you. The one thing people need to keep in mind is that Uber drivers can be anybody. As long as you have a clean driving record and a car that meets the company's standards, you can be an Uber driver. A woman in California was attending an event April 26th before getting into an Uber on her way home.
The driver, Angel Sanchez, picked her up in his minivan and began to sexually assault the woman. While the exact details haven't been released to the public, Sanchez is facing rape charges and is set to appear in court some time next week. Upon hearing about the incident, Uber has permanently banned Sanchez from the company and he is facing a maximum sentence of eight years in prison.
The woman was eventually able to escape from the car. Sanchez had driven her to Santa Anna before he began sexually assaulting her. While the woman was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the assault, that does not give anybody the right to take advantage of her. Whatever activity took place was not consensual in any way, shape, or form and intoxication is in no way consent. The woman's name has not been released and for her sake and the sake of all other victims, I hope this man is locked away forever.
