Yet another major manufacturer has stepped up to take part in the electric car race. Toyota recently announced plans to offer electric versions of all Toyota and Lexus models by 2025.
The plan is part of the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, a commitment the automaker made in October of 2015. The goal is to reduce CO2 emissions by 90% compared to 2010. This effort to offer electric variants of all their vehicles would be one huge step in that direction. This does not mean they will abandon combustion and hybrid cars, or even their less popular line of hydrogen vehicles.
The electric versions will first be introduced to China, where the need and demand of electric cars are at its strongest. After production is established there, they will spread to the US, UK, and Japan. Toyota will continue to utilize the Prius’ Toyota Hybrid System II drivetrain, as well as continuing to expand upon it.
There have also been reports that Toyota is working with Panasonic on a joint prismatic battery business. This is undoubtedly part of their electric car efforts.
