Toyota has announced the new 2019 Corolla Hatchback before its official debut at this year's New York auto show.

The first thing we notice is how strikingly similar it looks to the new Auris. The two vehicles are built using the same Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA). According to the automaker, giving the new Corolla a sport-tuned suspension alongside the TNGA makes the vehicle more fun to drive.

The body seems more attractive now, with sharper taillights and more outgoing headlights. The curvy rear blends well with the hatchback aspect, while also giving it a somewhat European look.

As for the specs, the Corolla Hatchback features a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine. the actual numbers haven't been released yet, but we're expecting it to be an improvement to the 2018 Corolla iM. So expect to see at least 137 hp and 126 lb-ft of torque. The continuously variable transmission sends power out to the front wheels. This means first gear will be a smoother experience compared to conventional CVT. A six-speed manual is also available as an option.

The interior keeps true to the standard Toyota style. It uses the same materials and designs as most vehicles, with the only notable feature being an infotainment screen. Instead of being nested in the center console, the screen is raised up, giving a floating touchpad look. Last we heard, Toyota still hasn't added Android Auto to their systems, so Apple Carplay is your only compatible option.

Expect standard modern safety features like automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and lane keep assist. As well as a rearview camera.

No pricing or sale dates have been announced. but we can expect to hear more about this during its official debut at the New York auto show.
