Heads up displays are nothing new. But Panasonic has a new display system that works to a greater degree than ever before. This new HUD system support augmented reality displays.

The technology company recent revealed a new HUD system at the Virtual CES 2021 event. The system draws on existing windshield casting technology to cast a HUD “over” the road. The primary difference, however, is that the images will be dynamically positioned to overlay with the road in front of the driver, appearing as an augmented reality display akin to a racing video game.

The HUD can display more than just current speed and gas level. This system can provide essentially everything a GPS system does, including a colored line along the roads the driver needs to follow. It can even detect and highlight cyclists and pedestrians.

With this kind of technology, drivers can have full access to all important navigational information without ever taking their eyes off the road. And the best part? Panasonic claims that the system is so compact that it can fit in any vehicle package. Since the display works by casting a light up and onto the windshield, it won’t require special, expensive glass either.

Unfortunately, don’t expect to find this system for sale as a standalone component to add to an existing car. Everything Panasonic shows off as CES events are instead offered as part of new vehicle productions. As such, expect to see this fascinating HUD tech in upcoming model years.
