Mercedes-Benz isn't best known for their rough and tough trucks, but they still hold their own well enough. Take the W140-generation S-Class built in the 90's, for example. Better yet, take that, jack it and prep it for the offroad.

DIY Garage recently premiered the W140-66, "the only Mercedes S500 Offroad ever built." This beefy set of wheels is an S-Class built upon a GAZ-66 military chassis.

The three-year project is a combination of Benz quality and Russian military heft. The power is still of Benz origins, using a 5.0-liter V-8 engine producing 320 horsepower. The Volkswagen Touareg caliper brake system is wrapped around Mickey Thompson 38-inch tires. This beast is not only able to climb over just about anything, but it can stop and sit there with equal ease. What's not borrowed from other builds is custom built for the occasion. The bumpers and lights were made specifically for the model, amplifying the tremendous authority it emulates.

The video itself details much of the build process that took place, concluding with some excellent off-road footage of the vehicle in action.
