The Boring Company, the underground tunnel development company ran by Elon Musk, has nearly finished their first tunnel. Musk dates completion of the first tunnel for this December, with plans for a grand opening the same month.

The first tunnel has been under construction for a few months now. It starts in Hawthorne, California, running relatively close to Interstate 405. Musk had stated back in May that the tunnel would be open in "a few months." The first tunnel will reportedly offer free transportation to the public. He appears to be keeping true to this word, as Musk has now stated that said tunnel will be free to the public on December 11.

The claims for human transportation implies that the company has received approval from proper transportation regulations, or they will be receiving said approval soon. The company also patented a system of garage-to-tunnel connections, potentially letting homeowners access the tunnel from their homes.

The announcement led to an impromptu interview with Musk over Twitter. Various questions asked by followers brought additional light to the upcoming travel system. The transport system will go at 155 miles per hour. The vehicles will focus on transporting pedestrians, though personal vehicle support will be included. group transit options are expected to look like their concept image, which shows a large, open-space pod.

Musk replied to a few Twitter users' queries, saying that the first tunnels will carry passengers at speeds of 155 mph. It's still unclear what the final vehicle will be, but conceptual sketches show pod-like capsules. Originally, Musk imagined the tunnels would carry passengers in cars and pedestrians, but the company shifted to focus more on mass transit. Musk said it's only fair to focus on everyone and not just those who own a car.

It'll be very interesting to see how this new addition will change the local traffic flow.
