While movie star Mark Wahlberg is busy selling cars, this particular car IS the movie star. the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder made famous for its role in the 1986 movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off is up for auction.
In the film, Ferris plays hooky from school and convinces his best friend Travis to sneak out with his father's prized 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder for a day of fun in the Chigaco streets. Now it's made its way to Mecum's 2018 Monterey auction.
Well, we say Ferrari, but it's actually a Modena. The movie car was actually a replica Modena GT Spyder California. The vehicle was designed off of the Ferrari because buying a genuine 250 GT would have taken up far too much of the film's production budget. Instead, John Hughes, director and writer of the film, had Modena create two running replicas and one shell for the film in only four weeks.
Despite being "for show," the replica still has a 5.0-liter V8 engine with four downdraft carburetors mated to a five-speed transmission.
This is one of the most famous vehicles in film history. In April of 2018, the Modena GT Spyder was the 22nd vehicle to be inducted into the Smithsonian Historical Vehicle Association Hall of Fame.
The auction will happen on Saturday, August 25. No word on starting price or estimated outcome, but we can only imagine it'll be a large one.
