Tesla turns heads every time they announce an electric variation of a common vehicle. The Model S,3, and so on showed the commuter capabilities. The Roadster showed the performance capabilities. The semi shook the shipping industry. And now, we might be seeing vans enter the mix.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently tweeted about the idea of cooperating with Mercedes-Benz about producing a Tesla van. The tweet came when an internet-goer made a statement about the usefulness an electric van would have in their trades occupation.

"Shame that’s not a Tesla VAN. Because we REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY need a good tough as nails electric trades van. We burn fuel like crazy."

Musk responded, expressing interest in the idea, namely with Daimler and Mercedes on an electric Sprinter.

"Maybe interesting to work with Daimler/Mercedes on an electric Sprinter. That’s a great van. We will inquire.
. . .
Lot on our plate, so it’s either get van gliders (no battery, powertrain or computer tech) from Daimler & produce sooner or do all & produce later. Not a big difference to total vehicles produced either way. Priority list is Model Y, solar roof tiles, pickup, semi, Roadster."

The company is currently struggling to meet the battery demand regarding production. Musk believes that such issues need to be addressed before the company can start progressing toward another new model line.

Large semis don't help much for local transportation and trade. So it's a fairly neglected market by Tesla. Should the pursue the idea, it won't be until 2021 as the soonest, so don't get too excited.
