The 2019 Nissan Altima has arrived, at the New York Auto Show that is. Here we get an up close and personal look at one of the automaker's most popular midsized sedans. While it has some fun features, the engine options are a touch bizarre.

The sixth-generation vehicle has a new look, which is nothing new. The nose slings lower, giving a sharper and more aerodynamic look. The headlights follow the hood and shoulder crease, giving it a piercing gaze. Compared to the last generation, this model is one inch longer, 0.9 inches wider, and 1.1 inches lower. The wheelbase is 1.9 inches large to accommodate.

You'll have your choice of two different options for whats under the hood. The base option is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder (188 hp and 180 lb-ft torque). The more powerful alternative is a variable-compression 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (248 hp and 273 lb-ft torque) instead of the old V6. Nissan claims this improves fuel efficiency. Why you'd turbocharge the smaller engine is beyond me, personally. Regardless which option you go for, it comes with a CVT transmission.

The 2.5 will come with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, while the 2.0 turbo option will be exclusively front-wheel drive. I hope you rotate your tires often, in that case.

The new Altima is packed with cool technology, at least. All models come with automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and Intelligent Driver Alertness. You'll find the latest ProPilot Assist system on the SV, SL and Platinum trims, which will help keep your car in its lane, even in inconsistent traffic. These trims also come with Rear Automatic Braking, which will automatically stop the vehicle before hitting anything when reversing at low speeds. The more immediately noticeable features include an eight-inch infotainment screen, which supports Apply CarPlay and Android Auto. This will allow the driver to perform tasks like unlocking doors and starting the engine from their smartphone.

The 2019 Altima is launching this fall at an unconfirmed price.
