Shelby SuperCars, now known as SSC North America, promised us at one point a Tuatara supercar. This vehicle could supposedly take the production car land speed record back. Though it seems as if it will remain a concept forever.
We initially saw the Tuatara concept back in 2011, at this point we had considered the project forgotten, that is until recently when we received a teaser for what we believe to be a production Tuatara. As exciting as this may be, it remains to be the only new information we have. As to the nature of teasers, there's not much to glean from that.
The likely cause of the delays is due to financing the construction of a plant. In 2011, Founder Jerod Shelby revealed a plan to build a Tuatara plant in West Richland, Washington. The plan was to have the plant operation by 2015, though a local source reported that the plant is being delayed while SSC acquired more funding.
Based on other models, predicted specs for the Tuatara consist of a 7.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 pushing out 1,350 horsepower and 1,280 pound-feet of torque. Being built in partnership with Nelson Racing Engines, the vehicle is said to go from 0-60 mph in only 2.5 seconds, a quarter mile in 9.75 seconds, and a top speed of 276 mph. Pricing and availability dates remain unknown, though I expect both to be a larger number than I care for.
