If there's one thing every car driver hates, aside from stupid people on the road, it's potholes. Those sneaky monsters pop up out of nowhere and can wreak havoc on your brand new ride. Well, people have been looking into it for a while, and it looks like self-repairing roads might be the answer. These roads would have steel fibers and bacteria that conduct heat and electricity to repair small cracks and holes in asphalt.

Now, the initial cost of building these roads is a bit higher than normal. You would be looking at about a 25% increase in building costs. However, it might save money in the long run. Asphalt maintenance is a pretty expensive task, and it required a lot of time every year. If you have a road that can fix itself, you're able to eliminate the long-term costs. On top of that, the electricity in these roads might actually be able to charge your electric car. To make these roads work, you'll have to pump heat and electricity through them. If you're stopped at a red light, your electric car can absorb some of the electricity that the street gives off and charge up just a bit.

It won't be anything incredible, but it's a bit of a free charge that you can't complain about. Maybe we can eventually have roads that charge your car constantly, but for now, that's a dream for the future. Either way, these little charges might be enough to get your range just a bit higher, although I wouldn't expect a free road trip.
