Samsung has officially gotten approval to begin testing self-driving cars in South Korea. The tech company will be working with a Hyundai vehicle that is equipped with sensors and cameras created by Samsung. In addition to the driverless vehicle, they plan on using artificial intelligence to see how the car would perform in stressful situations and poor weather conditions. Although the company has expressed a clear interest in autonomous driving since 2015, this is their first opportunity to test their creations in South Korea.
Last year, Samsung ended up buying the U.S. firm, Harman, for eight billion dollars. Harman is a tech company that specializes in developing software and components for connected cars. After Samsung bought the company out, it also decided to invest in TetraVue a few months ago, a company that specializes in developing technology that identifies unexpected objects in front of autonomous vehicles.
Samsung is really trying to hit the scene guns blazing here. They're clearly not afraid to drop a ton of money into this evolving trend and they obviously think this is going to be a very profitable investment. They aren't looking to design any vehicles themselves though. Don't worry, you won't be seeing a Samsung car company anytime soon. Instead, they're trying to make car plans and technology for the big car companies. They want to sell their products to these companies for a high price to make autonomous driving more attainable and efficient.
