Early Wednesday morning a runaway garbage truck crashed into the side of a Panera Bread restaurant in Uptown Gig Harbor. The nearby businesses were all evacuated after the accident because the crash had caused a gas leak. At around eleven in the morning, 911 phone calls began flowing in as witnesses started to report the crash. The truck driver was moving a dumpster back into position after moving it and forget to set the parking brake in the garbage truck.
The car began to roll backward without a driver for almost three hundred feet. It went through one parking lot, across the road, and then into another parking lot. Once it reached the second parking lot, the truck hit a parked car and continued to roll toward the restaurant. Once it hit the Panera Bread it shattered a window, however no structural damage was inflicted on the building. This is a very strange accident and certainly not something you hear about every day, especially since the truck was just in a slow roll.
Although reports came in around eleven in the morning, the gas leak was handled and safe within an hour. Some businesses still remained closed while officials removed the garbage truck and check on the structural integrity of the building. There were no injuries at all on scene and police were able to get everything cleaned up pretty quickly. If you want to see the video of the aftermath, you can check it out right here.
