Pininfarina has continued to make a bigger name for themselves as of late. Now they're taking what may be their biggest step yet. The Italian coachbuilder plans to make the jump into automaking, starting with hypercars.
According to a private announcement by company executives on Thursday, Pininfarina plans to launch four new cars under their own name sometime between 2020 and 2025. This is with the financial backing of Indian automaker Mahindra, who purchased Pininfarina in 2015.
Pininfarina vehicles have always been a sight to see, but the firm has previously expressed discontent with the limitations of their creativity. Before, they were left to the whims of traditional automakers and the designs they chose for their original vehicles. The freedom to design a vehicle in its entirety is the driving factor behind the push as an automaker.
The company's first vehicle will be called the PF0. It will be an electric hypercar designed to compete with the Bugatti Chiron. A select group of individuals ranging from investors to journalists will get a sneak peek at the model next month at the Pebble Beach Concours.
The PF0 will feature a hearty helping of carbon fiber, a 0-63 mph time of under two seconds, and a 0-186 mph of under five seconds. With four independent, axle-mounted electric motors, the vehicle can achieve nearly 250 mph top speed, according to Pininfarina.
The company only expects to sell 35 to 40 PF0s in the U.S. and 125 to 150 worldwide.
