It's no secret that Ford has been interested in hybridization, particularly with the Mustang. But now a recent patent filing gives us some insight about it in more detail.

The patent, filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office and imaged below, describes a twin-motor drive system for the hybrid Mustang. It also appears to be a V-8 engine with electric motors added to increase power and torque.

It's worth noting that the patent doesn't explicitly say it's for the Mustang. It may also be used for the F-150 hybrid pickup, which Ford announced plans for not long ago.

The electric motors assist the front wheels. One provided example consisted of an electric motor coupled to a first gear reduction box, mirrored on each side. The combustion engine would provide power to the rear wheels. If applied to the Mustang in this manner, it would be the first all-wheel-drive Ford Mustang to be produced.

The Mustang hybrid is due in 2020, and we expect to learn more about the car this year. Stay tuned.
