The Chevrolet SS sedan might be dead and gone, but that doesn’t mean the end of Corvette-powered family vehicles at Chevy. The Corvette team has recently stated that they have plans for a new family of high-performance SUVs in the works right now. In 2018 the Corvette name will be reintroduced as a brand, rather than a model, and the Zora supercar will be launched. The next car being added to that family is codenamed the Zora Nomad, and it is going to be a two-row sporty SUV.
The Nomad prototype is rumored to be larger than the Porsche Cayenne, but not as large as the Chevy Tahoe. This may change over time since it is in the early stages, but I think the size it’s at right now should be a pretty comfortable fit. The car is being built on a modified version of the Alpha platform that underpins that Camaro. It’s going to come standard with rear-wheel drive, but an all-wheel drive package will be optional. The Nomad will also be equipped with a slightly less powerful 436-horsepower version of the LT1 V8 at launch, but after the upcoming ZR1 launches a new package will be available for the Nomad with a more powerful engine.
The current debate with the vehicle is between tech and price. They are trying to figure out if It would be best to focus on performance while limiting technology and safety equipment to keep the car more affordable, or if they should go all out and make this a real luxury SUV with a price to match. I think that if the Nomad costs $40,000 without standard technology and safety gear, they may as well just tack on another $15,000 and make this a real luxury SUV. I would rather spend $55k on a high-quality car with standard equipment than spend $40k on a stripped down car with great performance. They could always just offer two separate packages though.
