A bit of an odd tradition has overtaken the Lion's club in Minnesota for the last decade or so. Every year they push an old Ford Escort on top of the ice on Cass Lake, and every spring they pull it out. The car has no transmission, engine, gas, batteries, or pollutants and they sell tickets for their fundraiser. Each ticket costs one dollar and whoever comes closest to the exact day, hour, and minute when the car breaks through the ice wins a prize.

The Lion's club donates half of the money they raise toward free eye exams for middle school students in their area. The other half of the money is broken up into four separate cash prizes, with one prize going to each of the four closest guesses. The club sets up inside of a grocery store and sells tickets every single year. Many people pass up on the opportunity, but there are also plenty of people who partake every single year.

This year their club has earned a few thousand dollars off of this event and things have been going pretty smoothly for the club members. It's basically tossing in one dollar and possibly earning three or four hundred in return. Of course it's a gamble, but the money is going toward something great and it's really nice to see these people trying to give back to their community with some fun and cash.
