Making a new car is very time-consuming. When you don't have something new to show at this year's New York Auto Show, what do you do? If you're Mini, you unveil a classic as a modified electric.

The British automaker presented a classic Mini on Wednesday, one with a fully electric powertrain conversion. This is because Mini plans to release an electric version of the Hardtop in 2019. Prototypes of the vehicle have already been spotted in the testing phase.

The conversion of the car is meant to pay homage to the Alec Issigonis-designed brand character, while still embracing modern technology. Mini's are already for their small, jumpy feel, akin to a go-kart. The instant torque and heavy base of electric vehicles will undoubtedly retain that.

They haven't released the spec details for the Classic Mini Electric. We're guessing it will use a single electric motor on the front end, with around a 200-mile battery range. Visual details like the yellow electric plug logo will likely see their way to production, as well.

Production of the electric Hardtop will take place at plants in England and China. Being a small, red, eco-friendly car, I anticipate this will be a popular choice with the local hipsters.
