Over the last several years, 3D printing has been a niche trend, good for making small figurines or items with a singular purpose. While sometimes 3D printing is seen to take things a step further, such as prosthetic limbs, it had always proven to be an inferior craft method to more traditional means. This hasn't stopped some automakers from getting what they can out of the trend.

Mini is planning to begin offering vehicle customization using 3D printed parts. A new program called Mini Yours Customized will allow customers to build their own custom pieces for their Minis online. This includes trim, inlays, and LED puddle light images. Once complete, Mini will print the part and ship it to the customer in a few weeks. They can install the new piece themselves, or have a dealer do it for them.

In an effort to retain the resale value of the car, Mini reassures us that the original part can be placed back onto the vehicle before selling the vehicle. Which means you don't have to worry about finding someone to buy a car with the name "CHAD" embossed into the floor. Alternatively, this means you can swap out from a collection of customized parts if one so desired. CHAD on Monday through Thursday, BROCK on Friday through Sunday

Some may see this as gimmicky, and it is! Though customization is something unique to the driver. I'd love to drive around town in a "CarMod.net" brandished Cooper. Unfortunately, no word on when the program will begin, or pricing.
