Tesla vehicles may come with the technology needed for driverless operation, but current laws and regulations still call for there to be someone in the driver seat with their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. Though not everyone follows this rule.

One British resident was caught having set his Tesla Model S into its autonomous mode when traveling down the highway, and climbing into the passenger seat of the car to relax. He was eventually apprehended by the police and is facing hefty repercussions.

The man was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and to pay 1,800 pounds. He was also banned from driving for 18 months and faces 10 days of rehabilitation.

He admitted that the decision was silly, and said that it was amazing that his car had the capability. He stated that he was the “unlucky one who got caught.” Inversely, the local police department describes his decision as “grossly irresponsible and could have easily ended in tragedy.”

There have been a few accidents involved with self-driving vehicles. Two deaths to have taken place in a self-driving Tesla have both been because the driver was not being attentive when the vehicle signaled for human intervention. Don't be careless with your expensive cars, everyone.
