There are some styles that deserve to be left for dead. Some examples that come to mind are wood paneling and flame decals. Lincoln has decided to revive one classic style for their next Continental, the suicide doors.

The news comes to us from sources at the 2018 National Automotive Dealers Association meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada. A number of dealers also confirmed the plan, though they wish to remain anonymous. According to said dealers, the suicide doors are meant to show Lincoln's commitment to sedans amid a market hungry for crossovers and SUVs.

The Continental had disappeared for a number of years, returning in 2016 to replace the MKS sedan. 2018 sales of the line are down compared to last year, however. Lincoln hasn't said anything about the suicide doors yet, but they do state that the Continental nameplate remained an important part of the Lincoln family.

We also hear some of the details regarding Lincoln's plans through 2020. The luxury automaker will add the Aviator crossover and another high riding model, with four more vehicles in the docket for after 2020.

The Aviator will be comparable to the next Ford Explorer and is likely serving as a replacement for the MKT. The Aviator and next Explorer are likely to ride on Ford's flexible D6 platform, which is thought to support rear- and all-wheel-drive layouts.

Something about different door opening directions really emphasizes class.
