A little over a month ago, we reported on grocery giant Kroger testing their own self-driving grocery delivery service. It must have been a success, because the service launched a trial program soon in Scottsdale, Arizona. Want to try it out? It only costs $5.95 per delivery.

Partnered with Nuro, the program launched Thursday, August 16. Anyone living in the 85257 area code can sign up to participate. With a flat rate and no minimum order, orders will be completed online or through the app and will be delivered to the customer's home in a self-driving Toyota Prius. These specialized vehicles were modified to optimize any available space for groceries, instead of people. A human can monitor the vehicle in case of an accident, at least.

Behind Kroger in the auto-grocery service is Walmart, who partnered with autonomous vehicle company Waymo. The partnership is testing their own self-driving fleet in the Arizona area.

This is a fantastic use of the autonomous abilities of modern cars. Many folks who are either elderly or disabled may struggle with the grocery shopping experience and this could help resolve that. Or you could be an introverted shut-in who makes a living writing about cars online, and this is yet another way they can get away with not leaving the house. Winners, either way.
