Hyundai recently announced a new partnership with Aurora Innovation, in an effort to advance their self-driving car program. The carmaker hopes to have a level 4 self-driving car available by 2021.

What does that mean? There are multiple levels of "self-driving" in regards to vehicles. Level 4 means that the vehicle can operate entirely by itself when in select conditions. Hyundai wants to achieve this, and have it purchasable, in only 3 years.

They plan on utilizing the Aurora Self Driving System, which includes sensors, hardware, and software in conjunction with machine learning and artificial intelligence to have Hyundai vehicles running autonomously. They are aiming for pilot cities first, which plans to take it worldwide once ready.

Hyundai Vice Chairman Woong Chul Yang had this to say.

“We know the future of transportation is autonomous, and autonomous driving technology needs to be proven in the real-world to accelerate deployment in a safe and scalable manner,”

Interestingly enough, this announcement came out the same day as a Volkswagen Group announcement of a similar partnership with Aurora.

Hyundai's formal announcement of the partnership will happen at next week's 2018 Consumer Electronics Show taking place in Las Vegas from January 8. We are sure to see a large number of announcements relating to electric vehicles, self-driving systems, and other electronic augmentations to cars.
