In an announcement Tuesday, General Motors will be recalling 230,000 vehicles due to a fault in the brake system.

According to the report, the fault lies with the rear brake piston. They may have been improperly chromed and tempered during manufacturing. GM claims that "hydrogen gas can remain trapped in the piston body," which will induce "softer' braking. This can result in not stopping as soon as the driver intends. Fortunately, no accidents regarding the issue have been reported at this time.

The recall issued is specifically for 2018 and 2019 model year Buick LaCrosse sedans, Cadillac XTS sedans, Chevrolet Cruze, Impala, Malibu sedans, Chevrolet Bolt EV electric cars, GMC Terrain, and Chevrolet Equinox crossover SUVs. This primarily affects the U.S., with some in Canada.

The defective part was produced by ZF Group, who were also responsible for a similar problem in the 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLE- and GLS-Class crossover SUVs, which had a recall issued last month. GM will resolve the issue by flushing the brake system.
