As part of the new map system, drivers will be able to read real-time traffic data and route suggestions, all of the features established in Google Maps. The new vehicles will also feature Google Assistant, which will open up a wide variety of voice commands. This will allow them to change everything from air conditioning to text messaging. Since it also supports the Play Store, drivers can also download third-party apps.
Henrik Green, senior vice president of R&D for Volvo Cars remarked on the announcement.
“The Google partnership is an important strategic alliance for Volvo Cars. The Android platform, Google services and Google’s working relationship with app developers in-house and worldwide will help us further improve the Volvo car experience.”
While the current infotainment system is an improvement over the old one, it still has its flaws. An overabundance of menus and occasional slow load times would often draw on drivers' nerves. It already sounds like the next step forward will be another huge leap for the system.
No specific dates have been given as to when to expect the new infotainment system to be implemented.
