When Daimler announced a car-sharing service, Car2Go, a number of folks saw this as a chance to save some money on cabs. But for a few, they were a new source of income. The Verge recently reported that as many as 100 Mercedes-Benz vehicles were stolen from Chicago, all formatted for Car2Go.

According to a report by the Chicago Police Department, 21 different individuals have been arrested in relation to a fraud ring regarding stolen Car2Go vehicles. One particular member faces additional charges, including identity theft, ID theft, and credit card theft. Everyone else was given misdemeanors.

Originally reported as hackers, Dailmer later explains that the system was not broken into, but that the culprits were using fraudulent information to abuse the system. It appears that the fraudsters would fake someone's identity, rent cars out under their name, and steal them after.

All of the stolen vehicles have been located and reclaimed using their built-in GPS systems, according to Chicago police.

Don't be dumb, folks.
