According to The Detroit News, Ford has contacted supplies stating that the redesign of the Fusion in North America, and the Mondeo in Europe, has been canceled.

The project, known as CD542N, would introduce a redesigned Fusion in 2020. Interestingly, the vehicle's release in China remains on track. This may mean the car's delay is due to unmet safety requirements. Sedans have also been decreasing in popularity in the last few years, which might also explain Ford's shift in focus.

Last month there were reports that the Fusion would be produced exclusively in China. These reports went unconfirmed, only that any Chinese-made vehicles would not be imported.

When asked about the Fusion's future, Ford spokesperson Mike Levine had this to say:

“Fusion remains an important part of the Ford lineup for years to come with even more new fresh features on the way.”

Fusion sales remain alright, with an average of 17,500 sales a month last year. Though when compared to 2016. this is a 22% decline. Comparing 2016 to 2015, there was an 11% decline. It certainly seems like the Fusion is fading.

Ford expressed back in October that they would be reducing the number of nameplates going forward, though without disclosing which nameplates would be the ones cut short. Consumer evidence has shown SUVs, Pickups, and Electric Vehicles to be growing in popularity. So there's a very strong chance that the sedan line of Ford vehicles is getting reduced, starting with the Fusion.
