GM's self-driving car division, Cruise Automation, has picked up two pretty well-known car hackers. Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek became known back in 2015 when they were able to hack into a Jeep and make it stop remotely. After some refinement in 2016, they were both offered jobs to work for Cruise.
With all of the self-driving technology in the works right now, safety is a huge concern. Hackers can easily get into a vehicle's software to disrupt it in a number of ways. By using Charlie and Chris, they can figure out where the weak spots are in their current design. Many companies are using professionals hackers to try to identify areas of concern in their technology.
Tesla just recently put their Model 3 through the hacking circuit and the hackers were able to open the car doors, the truck, and flick on each individual light. Like Chris and Charlie back in 2015, the hackers were even able to stop the Model 3 remotely. If companies don't bring in professional hackers, they most likely have some very vulnerable spots in their software.
