Autonomous driving is all over the car world in this day and age. People have been talking about it for years and manufacturers are now able to make the dream into a reality. With any technological advance, there's always one main question that is asked. Are people going to pay extra for this feature?
For self-driving cars, it's looking like an overwhelming yes. After recent surveys, car companies have reported consumers are willing to pay thousands more for a car that can drive itself. Even middle-class buyers would be completely fine with dropping five or ten thousand extra dollars on a self-driving machine. Now, that number shouldn't surprise you. In the busy world that we live in, it seems like everybody is trying to find more time to do what they have to do. The pressures of personal life, family, and work are major contributors to ordinary people never seeming to have enough time in the day.
For many, texting and driving is a serious problem. People need to send a text to a friend or an email to a co-worker and accidents happen all over the road. It's a dangerous game that people play and it kills more and more people every year. People are willing to spend an extra ten thousand dollars on a car so they can send those messages without worrying. They can hop in the car, let the car drive them all around town, and they get the chance to catch up on their busy life.
All-in-all, I think self-driving cars are a huge advancement and there's tons of money to be made in the industry. Hopefully, more affordable options will be available in the near future, but we just don't know for sure. This technology will be seeing many more advancements in the coming years, so maybe that five thousand extra will turn into fifteen thousand pretty quickly.
