Last Sunday, 39-year-old Matthew Pratt Drove into an embankment near Red Mountain Pass in Colorado. The Ridgway resident survived the incident, according to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction.
Matthew Pratt was driving south along U.S. Highway 550 in a Mazda RX7 when he lost control of the vehicle, sending him off the road by 370 feet, and into a scree field (a field of rock pieces built up from rock fall) until he tumbled to a halt.
After successfully removing himself from the vehicle, Pratt was airlifted away to St Mary's with severe injuries.
The vehicle was recovered later that night via Telluride Towing, according to owner Stuart Armstrong. He reported that the vehicle was removed by 8:30 pm with a team of him and 3 employees.
Armstrong estimates that the vehicle had to have flown 50 to 70 feet in the air before falling onto the rigid slope and tumbling the rest of the way. For reference, that is nearly the distance of one baseball base to another.
Matthew Pratt was declared stable Monday morning and will recover just fine. His car however has become nothing more than a crumpled mess of metal. It isn't clarified the reason for the accident, though it's always a safe idea to be extra cautious when traveling the mountainous roadways.
