The Victims

New Orleans has had it rough for a few years now, and the bad luck isn't letting up. An accident took place at the Krewe of Endymion parade in the Mid-City section of New Orleans on Saturday, one of the busiest nights of Mardi Gras. Thousands of people crowded the streets, watching the floats, tossing beads.

And then a car ploughed into the crowd, injuring 28 people. 21 had to be hospitalized, five of which are in a serious condition. The other 7 victims declined to be hospitalized. Among those injured were a New Orleans police officer and some 3 and 4-year-olds.

The Driver

The man accused had a blood-alcohol level of .232—almost three times the legal limit. Neilson Rizzuto, 25, has been charged with two counts of first-degree vehicular negligence resulting in injury. He might be facing more charges, but for now, that's what he's facing.

Rizzuto's bail is currently set at $125,000. If he does post bail, he will be under house arrest and required to wear an ankle monitor.

Police Chief Michael Harrison said Rizzuto was driving a gray Silverado pickup truck, and hit two cars before running into the crowd.
