With a majority of American drivers preferring automatic transmissions, manuals are gradually falling by the wayside. Even performance vehicles are beginning to no longer offer manual options. Though in the face of adversity, Chevrolet stands tall and will be offering additional manual options for the next Camaro model.
General Motors filed an emissions certification document 2 days ago, registering their 6.2-liter V-8 with the California Air Resources Board. While on its face, this seems like boring and insignificant information, the last page happens to reveal that the 2019 Camaro is listed for both a six-speed and a seven-speed manual transmission.
This likely means that the seven-speed option will include the skip-shift features seen in the Corvette, but skip-shift eliminator kits exist for a reason. With the shrinking market for manuals, this is a welcome addition to the transmission choice, skip-shift or otherwise. You can expect slightly better mileage on the seven-speed compared to the six.
Since this is such an unorthodox way of learning about the option, there's no way of knowing what trims will offer which transmissions. There's a chance we will see more on the 2019 Camaro at this year's New York Auto Show.
