Just last week we heard about the indefinite hiatus by Bloodhound, the team looking to break the world's land speed record. While unfortunate, they weren't the only one looking to break records. Over in Australia, Aussie Invader is developing their own rocket car, titled the 5R.

Led by drag rage legend Rosco McGlashan, the Aussie Invader team recently visited the United States in search of an appropriate testing site. The team is looking to exceed the 1,000 mph mark, which would break the current land speed record.

In terms of specs, the 5R is notably more powerful than the Bloodhound. McGlashan claims that the vehicle can achieve 1,000 mph in only 20 seconds, thanks to a total 200,000 horsepower. This is an approximate 35 seconds faster than the Bloodhound. Of course, these are only reported specs, there remains a fair degree of development and testing required first.

As you may expect, the vehicle will be propelled by a single, large, bi-propellant rocket engine. It stretches a whopping 52 feet long and requires solid aluminum wheel to handling the hefty size. The Australian team has required California-based Interorbital Systems for more help with the powertrain.

Currently, Aussie Invader plans to make their first formal attempt in 2020. But much like the Bloodhound team, additional funding will be required. To help offset this, individual donors can get their photo placed on the vehicle exterior by sponsoring. More information on that at the official website.
