With adaptive headlights now seeking approval in the United States, Volkswagen is popping back into the spotlight to show off their latest in lighting technology. The automaker group has recently detailed a lighting system that details a vehicle's intentions and other helpful information.

You may not have known, but Audi, child company of the Volkswagen Group, has their own lighting research and development facility at the Wolfsburg plant. The location features a 328-foot tunnel where engineers experiment and test out new lights. One of their ideas uses 30,000 light points, which can cast detailed projections onto the road ahead.

What if your lights could do more than just illuminate the road? What if it could display lines on the ground to let you know if you're going to fit in your parking spot? What if your taillights could show you the electric car's charge level when parked at home? The world is your oyster! Well, this is what Audi is working towards.

While the concept isn't exactly new, Audi has now detailed new details about the communication potential of autonomous cars.

What if cars had as much expression as our eyes did? When parked, the eyes would be closed, when a cyclist or pedestrian is crossing the street, the eyes could "look" at them to let them know they are aware of their presence. If we understood the intentions and expressions of autonomous vehicles, we can interact with them more effectively on the road.

I'd love to see this in people-driven cars as well, to be honest. Some of y'all are crazy drivers.
