Apple already gave up on their own self-driving car, but they aren't entirely out of the game just yet. CNBC recently reported that Apple has patented a navigational system for self-driving vehicles.
Currently, self-driving cars use a static map that is updated frequently. The vehicle uses a number of built-in sensors in conjunction with this preexisting map to process where and how to drive. Apple is looking to cut out hefty process handles information in maps by directing the car "independently of any data received from any devices external to the vehicle, and any navigation data stored locally to the vehicle prior to any monitoring of navigation."
This is a somewhat unexpected decision considering the burial of Apple's "Project Titan." The self-driving car project was dissolved after poor management and a lack of project direction. They simply couldn't make a "do anything" car. This patent is strong evidence that while Apple may not be making their own car, they aren't missing the chance to get into the industry while it's at its hottest.
If its anything like their Apple Maps app on iPhone, then I have very little faith in it.
