He will be replacing Stoffel Vandoorne, the current McLaren F1 driver. Vandoorne is stepping down from his position at the end of the year after a two-year stint. He doesn't plan to end driving, but he has yet to reveal his plans for the following season at this time.
Despite his age, the British young adult solidified his potential already as a test and reserve driver for the automaker's team. Norris rose very quickly through the ranks of junior racing, having won the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup, Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and the Toyota Racing Series Championship in 2016, not to mention the five karting competitions in previous years. He also ranked second at the 2018 Formula 2 Championship.
“To be announced as a race driver for McLaren is a dream come true. although I’ve been part of the team for a while now, this is a special moment, one I could only hope would become reality,” said Norris in a statement.
To reach such a position in motorsports is an incredible accomplishment. To do so as such an age only amplifies the amazement. Congratulations to Norris.
