People have been cautious with self-driving ride-hailing services. Particularly after the autonomous Uber car collided with a woman walking in the road, killing her. But this hasn't halted progress. Alphabet's Waymo has been doing real work lately, now pushing a combined 25,000 miles a day.

The company announced the milestone on Friday when CEO John Krafcik spoke with Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval at the National Governors Association conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He boasted that Waymo has driven over 8 million miles on public roads.

What makes this more remarkable is that there have been no major incidents with the Waymo service since launch. When the Uber accident happened last March, it forced the company to put a pin on their autonomous branch. It also pushed the state of Arizona to ban the company from using self-driving cars in state limits. Inversely, Waymo intends to extend their autonomous taxi service to the Phoenix, Arizona area later this year.

The company's 8 million mile brag is made even more impressive when you consider simulated 5.0 billion miles their software has undergone. The company will run scenarios in a simulated environment in order to further refine the learning process and make for safer vehicles.

Leave it to a Google company to take the lead on a technology.
