Volvo has decided that they're going to ditch their old Microsoft-powered in-car systems and go for the Android approach. The Swedish-based carmaker under Chinese ownership has officially signed a deal with Google to develop the next generation of in-car systems using the Android platform. Volvo is expecting to have these brand new systems in all of their newer models within the next two years.

The first course of action for the partners will be implementing Google Local Search. This is a location-based service application that will run on the new Volvo navigation systems. If you're an app developer, this might be good news for you as well. If Android app developers want to create applications for in-car usage, you might get yours to be featured inside of a brand new Volvo.

The biggest reason for Volvo's switch has to do with the huge increase of self-driving systems. They believe that after self-driving, people are going to want more entertaining vehicles. If people don't need to pay attention to the road, what are they going to do on a long car ride? Volvo has already committed to having a self-driving system on the market by 2021, so why not be fully prepared for life after autonomous driving is perfected. With this deal, they are going one step further and are making sure they have the most entertaining cars in the world.
