Grab your nine-iron and get behind the wheel, Volkswagen hasn't given up on the 400 horsepower Golf R. New information about the automaker claims that the hatchback is still a possibility.

According to a report by Autocar on Friday, the Golf R Plus model, based on the next generation Golf, has the support of Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess. The model was under fear of removal after it was revealed that VW R division head Jost Capito expressed a desire to rule it out because "customers don't want it."

Volkswagen has made tremendous progress with the Golf R since its conception. The company already has a design mockup, featuring a more aggressive style and wider body. Should the model get the green light, it can be expected competition with the Audi RS 3, with a bit of competition with the Mercedes-AMG A45. As such, we could expect them to cost around the mid $45,000. The last Golf R was priced at $41,000 after all.

The Golf R isn't dead yet, but we won't know for sure until a formal announcement by Volkswagen. Stay tuned.
