One of the few genuine bothers of electric vehicles is trying to charge them away from home. With limited availability and few spaces, it can be hard to find one when you need it. Volkswagen is looking to make this a little easier with portable electric fast chargers.

Next year, VW plans to premiere a line of mobile fast-charging stations. While not the first company to do so, they'll be the first major automaker to do so. Instead of constructing stationary charge stations, companies and local municipalities can deploy these portable charging stations dynamically as they see fit. It can be used to test popular locations before investing in permanent structures. for example. Or even deployed in surplus when preparing for local events.

It operates similarly to a power bank for mobile devices. It is essentially a giant battery that is charged up and placed out in the world. Each station contains enough juice for 15 full electric car charges. It's 360 kWh capacity will only take 17 minutes for a full charge, as well. The stations can also be attached to a 30 kw power supply, recharging itself slowly between uses.

The first mobile station will be deployed in Wolfsburg, Germany, WV hometown, next year. Should it prove a worthwhile venture, the company will extend the project to other cities in 2020.

Volkswagen's first electric car that can use the system won't actually release until 2020. It's called the ID Neo Hatchback and will be the brand's launch into electrification.
