Jeep is working on a new pickup truck based on the Wrangler. While this isn't anything new, the discovery that it could very well be a convertible is a surprising twist. Reports from an automotive press outlet are saying that the new truck could have a soft top capable of being either lowered or removed entirely.

According to sources, the Wrangler-style pickup will be available as a drop top or solid top. It will be produced alongside the JK Wrangler and the upcoming JL Wrangler. The roof and support structures had to be redesigned however in order to comply with current safety regulations on roof strength.

A concept car similar in design was revealed by Jeep at the annual Easter Safari as the Crew Chief 715. The design cues of the Crew Chief 715 will likely play an influence in the Wrangler pickup's design, with the exception of the grille. The traditional seven-slot grille found in production Jeep vehicles is the most likely choice for the pickup.

Rumors are floating around about the potential for a diesel powertrain and a longer frame compared to the Wrangler Unlimited. The only truly confirmable information at this time is that it will be built alongside a number of other SUVs at the FCA’s plant based in Toledo, Ohio.
