Hurricane Irma has landed, but people have been evacuating from Florida over the past few days. In order to help out with evacuation, Tesla has given their vehicles in Florida a bit more range. Florida residents that own a Model S, Model X 60, and Model X60D vehicles are temporarily allowed to bypass the cars range limiter.

Under normal circumstances, these cars don't utilize the full mileage capabilities of their 75 kWh battery packs and achieve an estimated 210 mile range. With Tesla remotely removing the limiters on the vehicles, resident can get an extra 30 or so miles from their Teslas.

Elon Musk certainly won't be dropping down with search and rescue after the hurricane subsides, but he is allowing his company to do what they can to help out. The extra 30 miles will help drivers who are stuck in traffic for long periods of time, allowing them to hopefully leave Florida as quickly as possible. Here's hoping that everybody in the storm's path was able to get out in time and that this move by Tesla actually helped get people out of danger.
