A few months ago, Porsche revealed a special 993-generation Porsche 911 Turbo. It was built in commemoration of the marque's 70th anniversary. And now, it's sold for $3.1 million.

It was called Project Gold. It started with the original body of a 993 911, which was given a new chassis and VIN. Lastly, they threw in a hefty pile of mods and gave it a clean coat of golden paint.

Once the product was complete, it went to auction at RM Sotheby's. The event ran on Saturday, where it had racked up the highest bid of $3.1 million. To make it even more impressive, the sale was listed for charity, with the proceeds going toward the Ferry Porsche Foundation. This organization was founded earlier this year to support education, research, sport, culture, and social affairs.

The golden paint option wasn't just to make it look ritzy. It's in reference to the 2018 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series. Project Gold also featured the same side air intakes 993 911 Turbo's S variant, but Project Air Intake didn't sound as catchy.

Unfortunately, a new VIN means it's a new register with modern emission and noise regulations. The model itself doesn't actually comply with these regulations, so it cannot be legally driven in many countries.
