Porsche has a history of hosting its own one-make championship series. And they're bringing that history into the modern, and digital, age. The automaker announced a new, virtual racing championship on Monday, dubbed the Porsche eSports Supercup.

The Supercup will be just like any other one-make championship, with dozens of participants, cash prizes, and so on. Except this time, it's all about video game racing over real life. Done with the partnership of iRacing, the largest competitive racing game platform in the world, 40 different drivers will participate in the best of 10 races.

The winner will then be given the same honors and treatment as a traditional racer would, according to head of Porsche Motorsport Fritz Enzinger. The winner will be honored at the Porsche Night of Champions gala, an event marking the success of motorsports over the year. They'll also be awarded $100,000, of course.

Porsche believes that the electronic side of racing is still a valid part of motorsports. And with the brand's deep roots in racing, it was only appropriate that they recognize that.

The first race will take place on April 13 at a virtual Barber Motorsport Park. The 10 races will run through September 28, concluding at a digital Monza. Good luck racers!
