In Quincy, Massachusetts a 9-month-old boy was left in the back sear of an Uber driver’s car. The parents got out of the car at a convenience store to grab some drinks and came back out to see that the Uber was no longer in sight. They used the Uber phone app to trace the driver’s route and after 20 minutes were able to reconnect with their son. The child was found safe in his seat and was sleeping throughout the entire ordeal.

The miscommunication was caused by a language barrier between the driver and parents. The driver believed that the father, who was in the passenger seat, was the only one getting dropped off at the store. He did not realize that the mother who was seated behind him got out of the car as well. He continued on to the final destination when the father got out, thinking that the mother was still in the vehicle.

When police arrived they filed a 51A, which is can be filed for suspected child neglect and/or abuse. Since police officers are mandated reporters and the child was left in the Uber driver’s car without supervision of parents, the police submitted their 51A to the Department of Children and Families. Luckily, everything was okay and the child was unharmed. This could have been a much more tragic story and for those of you who take Ubers with your children, please make sure they’re with you whenever you get out.
