It seems like the automotive industry has four kinds of cars they focus on, high tech cars, Supercars, classic cars, and just the wonky weird cars. Today, Mercedes-Benz dives deep into the funky bunch.

The automaker debuted what they call the Vision Urbanetic concept. Instead of focusing on comfort, it goes hard toward efficiency. Specifically, it aims to transports people and goods in the more efficient way possible.

It begins with an electric powertrain. While details of the range, charging, etc were left out, the automaker premiered a "self-learning IT infrastructure for the continual analysis of transportation needs." But what does that mean exactly? The vehicle uses AI technology to guess where it's needed the most and responding accordingly. Examples include a group of these vehicles automatically gathering outside of a music hall right when a major concert comes to an end. Since each vehicle can hold up to 12 passengers, it could handle the surge of traffic quickly.

To ease consumer concerns for self-driving cars, each vehicle features a large display, showing the passengers exactly what the car sees and how it scans the environment. There won't be any wondering if your vehicle can see the car or the person on the sidewalk; the car will tell you.

The Vision Urbanetic even features a module body to best suit its needs. Should the vehicle be transporting goods instead of people, it can shift to the alternate module designed to transport up to 350 cubic feet of cargo. Mercedes-Benz didn't detail exactly how the system works, but they claim it can make the transition in only a few minutes.

A physical example of the concept will be on display at the Frankfurt motor show this year on September 20.
